January 2022 Highlights - Foreclosure Prevention

The Enterprises' Foreclosure Prevention Actions:

  • The Enterprises completed 46,857 foreclosure prevention actions in January, bringing the total to 6,411,135 since the start of the conservatorships in September 2008.

This report primarily focuses on Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 but also includes the five-year reporting period between FY 2017 and FY 2021. It was prepared in accordance with the requirements of Title II, Section 203 of the Notification and Federal Employee Antidiscrimination and Retaliation Act of 2002 (No FEAR Act). The No FEAR Act and regulations at 5 C.F.R. Part 724 require that federal agencies be accountable for violations of antidiscrimination and whistleblower protection laws.

House prices rose nationwide in January, up 1.6 percent from the previous month, according to the latest Federal Housing Finance Agency House Price Index (FHFA HPI®). House prices rose 18.2 percent from January 2021 to January 2022. The previously reported 1.2 percent price change for December 2021 was revised upward to a 1.3 percent price change.

4Q21 Highlights — Foreclosure Prevention

The Enterprises' Foreclosure Prevention Actions:

  • The Enterprises completed 153,793 foreclosure prevention actions in the fourth quarter, bringing the total to 6,364,278 since the start of conservatorships in September 2008. Of these actions, 5,660,815 have helped troubled homeowners stay in their homes, including 2,503,377 permanent loan modifications.
  • Initiated forbearance plans decreased to 72,146 in the fourth quarter from 75,201 in the third quarter of 2021.

The FOIA requires each federal agency to submit an Annual Report to the Attorney General each year. These reports contain detailed statistics on the numbers of requests received and processed by each agency, the time taken to respond, and the outcome of each request, as well as many other vital statistics regarding the administration of the FOIA at federal departments and agencies.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac began issuing the Uniform Mortgage-Backed Securities (UMBS) on June 3, 2019.

This quarterly report provides market participants additional transparency into a sample of the data FHFA receives and reviews on a monthly basis. The report focuses on alignment of prepayment rates, which continues to be important to the success of UMBS and to the efficiency and liquidity of the secondary mortgage market.

U.S. house prices rose 17.5 percent from the fourth quarter of 2020 to the fourth quarter of 2021 according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency House Price Index (FHFA HPI®). House prices were up 3.3 percent compared to the third quarter of 2021. FHFA’s seasonally adjusted monthly index for December was up 1.2 percent from November.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) today released the FHFA Strategic Plan: Fiscal Years 2022-2026, which reflects the Agency's priorities as regulator of the Federal Home Loan Banks (FHLBanks) and as regulator and conservator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the Enterprises).

  • The Enterprises completed 47,027 foreclosure prevention actions in November, bringing the total to 6,323,247 since the start of the conservatorships in September 2008.
