The Council for Affordable and Rural Housing (CARH) is a trade association representing all aspects of the rural multifamily affordable housing industry. CARH is pleased that both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have included rural multifamily affordable housing in their respective Duty to Serve plans. The rural portfolio continues to age with a need of over $5 billion in capital needs for preservation efforts. New initiatives and modifications to existing programs and policies are needed especially as the budgets for affordable housing programs continue to be threatened with cuts. As outlined in their respective Duty to Serve plans, both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac acknowledge that it may take them some time to develop products that can successfully be used by the industry for preservation of affordable housing in rural America. CARH looks forward to continuing the dialog with both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac so that the rural components of the Duty to Serve plans can be implemented and policies developed. The residents who live in these rural communities need to know that affordable housing will continue to be there.
