While arguments may be made about the lack of leadership in Congress to continue to oversee the FHLBank System, I believe any changes to the mission should be authorized by Congress. The FHLBank System has been key to our liquidity for financing housing and community development efforts in our local community. Community banks operating without access to the FHLBank System would not be able to meet the needs of their local communities.
The banking industry and interest rates are not the cause of issues with affordable housing. The cost of building materials has dramatically affected what is considered affordable, and as such should be focus of federal efforts to continue expanding housing options.
