Rent increases have vastly outpaced wage increases. Allowing property management companies and landlords to increase rates without limit is going to exacerbate an existing housing crisis. Low-income and middle-class people are bearing the burden of out-of-control rents. This funnels a much larger portion of their hard-earned money to one company and limits the amount they have to spend on other basic necessities and extras, which hurts the overall economy.
In addition, the U.S. already has an unacceptably high number of unhoused individuals and families. How can we, as a society, not work to prevent increased homelessness due to the inability to pay astronomically high rents?
