As a renter in Kentucky, I have struggled like many through the last few years to stay in safe and affordable housing. During Covid, my family and I were kicked out of our home and given 30 days to move out so our landlords could put the house on the market. With such a short time to find a new home, we were forced to move into an overpriced, unsafe, apartment owned by a slumlord. In the less than 1 year we lived there, we dealt with: $500+ monthly utility bills, heat outages during the coldest part of the year, no access to the laundry facilities we paid for as it would break for months on end, and water from oue upstairs neighbors restroom consistently pouring out of the ceiling. We eventually had to move due to the high rent and unlivable conditions. We are extremely lucky that we were able to find a place to stay when our landlords sold our home, but many people in Kentucky are not so lucky.

We need just cause evictions, tenants bill of rights, and other tenant protections to ensure no Kentuckian has to stress about where they’re going to sleep tonight.
