I make roughly the median national income in a LCOL area. I have minimal debt and no dependents and my rent happens to be reasonable, but there are virtually no protections for me should I fail to make rent for 1-2 months and minimal accountability for my landlord should something happen to make my apartment inhabitable. Many people are in far worse situations and under the current circumstances face homelessness and economic ruin, for reasons completely beyond their control, without recourse. It would be an obvious social and economic good to implement these protections.
