The Associated Press has reported that "eviction filings are 50% higher than they were pre-pandemic in some cities as rents rise." Where I live in Los Angeles, California, too many renters are "rent burdened," or spending more than 30% of their income on rent costs. In January of this year, The New York Times reported that, in 2022, Angelenos were spending over 35% of their incomes on rent, and, "The rent-to-income ratio continued to climb up because income growth was not able to catch up with the rent growth." Renters need more protections in order to remain housed. An eviction on the record of the renter makes it so much harder to find another rental. In June of this year, the Los Angeles Times reported that a recent study found that "financial instability" and "a lack of affordable housing" were the most important factors leading to the explosion of unhoused or homeless people in the city. You have a chance to help so many people avoid living in their car or on the streets, including families with children. Please strengthen protections for renters. Now is the time to act. This crisis is at a tipping point.
