My name is Brianna Vazquez, and I am pro establishing tenant protections against greedy corporate landlords. I am a resident of Bellevue, WA. On March 31, 2021, I received a notice from Greystar Property Management advising me of a Notice of Rent Increase. I was already paying $2,049 for a 2 bedroom unit. They now wanted me to pay $2,364. If I wanted to go month to month, my rent would be $4,347 which is 112% increase. This incident happened on the tail end of them not giving me proper notice for a rent increase during my previous rent negotiations. I called a housing rights org and they said there was little they could do as this was a common practice of landlords. Although I barely make above the King County Median Income Family Limit, I am a single Mother who has little safety net if I were to lose my job. I had to come up with $6,000 for first, last and deposit, as well as incur cost of time off to move, move expenses, to pay $2,200 for a unit that would have health code violations with hostile neighbors, meaning I had to move AGAIN, but rent options are scarce in my area. For example, my old unit is now going for $2,566 last time I checked on 7/31/23. I am In support of reforms because these increases are unscrupulous, untenable, and should be illegal. Greystar is now facing a lawsuit for allegedly inflating prices. I am a real life consequence of their actions. I then moved to another property managed by a property management company who does not fix the water heater, and even with mold when i moved into my new unit, has not adressed the issue. I have been here 4 months now and am experinecing health consequences due to this. When are profits going to stop being more important than people?
