As a member of Virginia Organizing in Waynesboro Virginia I have been working on a campaign for affordable housing. Our chapter has canvassed most of the low income residential apartments in Waynesboro and have been shocked at the conditions of too many units where the landlords are refusing to fix holes in the floors and walls, rampant mold, missing radiator covers, roach infestations, outside doors that don't lock, drug use and sales as well as gun violence in their properties. The local government drags its feet on implementing a rental inspection program, which we have been pushing for over the last two years. The renters in low income housing are not being properly protected from predatory landlords who are not being held accountable for their greed and negligence. Any legislation the federal government can implement is seriously needed by those who have few to no resources.
