I enthusiastically support the proposal to attach protections for renters, including rent control, good cause eviction, fair leasing and safe housing standards, to federal loans. This would cover 1 in 4 apartments in the country, and do a great deal to reduce the number of unhoused citizens. Too many people, sober, working people, in my town of Brattleboro, Vermont are living in tents, cars, and shelters because there is not enough affordable housing. Thefederal government is in a position to affect the way many landlords do business, as it offers them favorable loan terms to finance their businesses and, sometimes, unfortunately, enables their predatory behavior. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, also known as the “Government Sponsored Enterprises,” work with banks to offer $150 billion to landlords in financing every year, without any strings attached. It is time to leverage this position to effect positive change that will benefit communities large and small across the country.
