It is the duty of the FHFA to protect tenants. Right now in NYC, my 90 year old mother--as well as one million more New Yorkers, many in the same position as her--fall prey to a mayor who nearly alone decides how much and for how long rent increases on rent-stabilized apartments across the five boroughs. In his zeal to pay back the landlords who financed his campaign, he has raised that amount to an unprecedentedly high level. Should it sustain over just a few years, it could drive hundreds of thousands of elderly people living on a fixed income out of their homes and into the streets. This cannot be allowed to happen. Use your power to stop it. And ensure that rent-stabilization and rent-control continues to be the law of the land, with specific rules to prevent such price-gouging by unscrupulous politicians and landlords.
