Now is a critical time for the FHFA and Congress to act on tenant protections. People in my community are suffering from rising rents, poor living conditions, and eviction. Oftentimes the landlords responsible for this crisis are real estate companies or other private investors who have received loans through Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. In essence, landlords have too much power, and tenants have too little. The federal government should not be subsidizing this power imbalance. That is why I am demanding the FHFA and Congress subject landlords who benefit from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans to regulations designed to promote tenant rights. These tenant protections should include rent control, just cause eviction, and enforcement of better living conditions. Lastly, the FHFA and Congress must create better processes and structures to listen to and follow the leadership of impacted tenants.
