I have lived in the same one bedroom apartment in Bucks County, Pennsylvania for almost three years. In that time, my rent has increased 30%. I've experienced roach, ant, and wasp infestations that were met with little assistance from property management. My ceiling leaked during a storm and property management never repaired it. I have several mold spots throughout the apartment that were presumably painted over before I moved in and continue to get worse. Recently a dead tree fell on 3 cars in our parking lot, impacting elders and a parent of an infant. There is absolutely no excuse for property management companies and landlords to be raising rents, especially when we are living in unsafe, unhealthy, and unsustainable units. My elderly neighbor who has cancer and lives on a fixed income was threatened with eviction after missing rent due to hospitalization for a heart attack. Eviction is a violent act and impacts the most marginalized in our society. Tenants are human beings deserving of dignity and housing is a human right.
