Living in a college town, I have seen how landlords and large leasing and property companies take advantage of people who are unaware of their rights as tenants. Even knowing your rights it can be hard to stand up for yourself as the landlord has the advantage of controlling your living environment or your money, such as trying to get a deposit back. Many times the only recourse to fight back is to try to go to court which is costly and time consuming, which many people aren't able to do and landlords know this. Renters deserve codified rights and protections.
