I would like to express my desire to see greater protections for tenants against unfair and often predatory or exploitative behavior from landlords who receive government-backed loans. Given that the assistance to landlords comes from the government in this case and, therefore, ultimately from the taxpayers, I think it is vital that receiving said assistance should be linked to minimum standards of ethical behavior in reference to equitable and just treatment of tenants. Examples of tenant protection restrictions that I would support are: rent regulations, prohibiting evictions without good cause, banning "source of income" discrimination, protections for tenants from discriminatory practices (based on race, religion, gender preference, etc.), safe and quality housing standards, landlord registries, tenant rights to organize, standardized and fair leases, and establishing an office of tenant protections.
