We need rent control nationwide! So many people are falling through the cracks… there aren’t enough nonprofit OR government resources on all levels… The past two years I have spent being unstable in my housing, ending up in my car, finally in a DV shelter, and then when I was housed it’s been precious ever since. Student loan payments and their interest are suffocating… I was shocked and deeply saddened when I found myself homeless in my own hometown, Kansas City, one of the last truly “affordable” metro areas in the US. My father graduated high school from the local High School (now being gutted and turned into apartments I could never afford) and my grandmother (his mom) raised 8 kids -on a bartenders’ salary while leading a Bible Study ever Wednesday- in a house 5 blocks down 41st street and it’s for sale. I could never dream of affording the down payment. My family on both side are 4th generation working class in the Kansas/Missouri region. We helped build this city and this country. We all worked hard to get ahead but sometimes that isn’t enough in this economy. Affordable housing, truly affordable to ALL, is a basic human right. Please ensure it is treated as such in the United States.
