Tenant protections need to be a basic requirement for all federal funding and support. Housing is a basic need. First of all, this should include rent control. When housing costs outpace inflation, people are displaced from their homes. Where I live, prices for housing are rising so fast, my elderly friends have seen their rents rise over 20% in the last two years. Two friends have had to move in with their adult children, essentially made homeless. Rent control is the only mechanism protecting people from price gouging. Second, discrimination in housing is rampant and it is achieved by many strategies including credit checks, background checks, bidding wars, waiting lists, and visual assessments of potential tenants by rental agencies. Finally, housing at the hands of for-profit corporations is simply predatory. Corporations should not profit at the expense of people's basic needs.

I urge you to include tenant protections in all FHFA contracts, loans, and guidelines.
