I'm a success by most measures: highly educated and I have a good job. I'm saving aggressively for retirement but my student loans are too high for me to buy my own home. Thus, despite my general success, my future is insecure and I fear that when I am old I will not be able to afford shelter. I have watched rents rise while buildings remain unfilled and new structures ruin neighborhoods only to remain untenanted. Current laws governing tenancy and rental units don't just favor landlords; they actively harm tenants. Not that the laws mean that much to some of the landlords in my area; I've watched them evict tenants illegally because they know the tenants are unlikely to be able to afford to go to court. Even if they lose, the landlord is just fined less than they profit so fines are simply a cost of doing business. This needs fixing.
