Hi, I support tenant protects such as Rent Control, Just Cause Eviction, protections against discrimination, and inclusion of Source of Income protections against discrimination. As a tenant, I have been one of the relatively small percentage of Americans who has benefited from rent control, in Oakland. Having rent control for 20+ years has enabled me to work in nonprofit community mental health as a counselor, thus contributing to the overall community of Oakland and the Bay Area. I cannot afford to buy a home, and I would be priced out of the area if I didn’t have rent control. I believe that the severe increase in rents over the past 20 years is a detriment to the stability of our communities, increases the crime rates, leads to more homelessness, and creates a more transient population. We need better tenant protections!
