I've been renting in KC for about 3 years now. I lived in the same apartment building during that time. My rent has gone up from $675 to $1075 in that time frame. I quit 2 jobs just to try and find one that could allow me to stay here because I have nowhere else to go that would be affordable and safe to live in. With the price raises, the apartment has only been getting worse over the years. I've always had problems getting a hold of maintenance due to always being understaffed. But I've had a broken light fixture for about a year and a half now. No safe or easy way to open my windows. And worst of all I spent the last 6 months of this year battling my landlord to have working ac and heat. Which is in my lease for him to be in charge of fixing. It's been 66 degrees in my apartment during the winter and over 89 in the summer. And only got it back after having to involve the Missouri Health Department 3 times. And waiting months due to the two-week allowance for them to fix the problem. I want to see change so that I can feel safe and comfortable in my home. Things like rent regulation so I won't have to worry about finding a new job every year or adding more jobs to afford shelter. Safe, quality, accessible housing standards. That requires all landlords to keep their properties in good condition. And to ensure homes are accessible for people with disabilities. No renter should have to live in an inaccessible home or in housing conditions that put their health and safety at risk. And lastly, good cause eviction. This will prohibit evictions without good cause, ensuring every tenant has the right to a lease renewal. And good cause is defined as serious and repeated lease violations provable in a court of law.
