We have a permanent renters class now that the American Dream is beyond reach for most & we need protects from predatory corporate companies buying up all the housing stock therefore manipulating the “market rates”.
Too many renters experience housing instability due to the power imbalances in our housing system, through which landlords have the ability to create and perpetuate uninhabitable living conditions, displace tenants from their homes, and retaliate in harmful ways when tenants try to exercise their right to safe and affordable housing. This dearth of tenant protection policies, such as just cause eviction protections and rent stabilization, have allowed racial and economic inequities in our housing system to persist and deepen. The FHFA RFI is an opportunity to change that. We have an opportunity to advance tenant protections for the 12+ million renters living in rental properties with federally backed mortgages. FHFA needs to hear about real people’s experiences accessing and maintaining safe, stable, and affordable housing so that they can consider tenant protections that will meaningfully improve the lives of renters across the country living in multifamily homes with federally-backed mortgages.
