The United States is facing a national housing crisis. The perpetrators are landlords and management companies that raise rents to increase their own profits at the expense of tenants, who constitute 1/3 of Americans. Many of these landlords borrow from government-backed financial institutions. They benefit from federal largesse while squeezing ordinary Americans. The CEO of Blackstone earned $1.3 billion last year while his corporation extorted money from tenants and evicted those who could not afford sky-high rents. Many renters must choose between paying rent and putting food on the table, while evictions are deeply destabilizing to families.

The federal government can do something about this--it can attach rent control and tenant protections when landlords receive federal financing. THIS is what government should be for--creating a livable society for ALL of us, not helping to enrich the billionaire class.
