The housing and rent crisis the country is currently facing effects numerous Americans, and has impacted mine and my families life in egregious ways. In my current housing situation, we have endured unfair practices and undue rent hikes that are disproportionate to the amount of care and attention put into managing the property we live on. The unit in which we rent has had outdated, barely functional utilities as well as rust colored water that is of poor pressure and temperature - an outrageous issue considering clean and safe water should be the bare minimum provided by our landlords/property managers. Prior to the current management, we had our contracts shifted between multiple negligent owners due to constant company buyouts. Through these transitions there was no standard of quality maintained, and the situation has only minimally improved while rent continues to increase. I am now submitting a comment, as a concerned citizen and tenant, to advocate for fair treatment for tenants and a universal standard of care for all renters across the United States. Landlords should be required to enter a registry to maintain transparency with their tenants, as well as provide some metric through which to be held accountable. Similarly, rent prices should be controlled and inequitable barriers to renting should be abolished. Laws and legislation in place meant to protect citizens from unfair housing practices that discriminate against individuals on status, income, race and other protected categories should be taken seriously and upheld. Furthermore, any and all actions should be taken under the leadership of tenants unions, or specific organizations built to represent and advocate for tenants. The FHFA should be dedicated to upholding their duties and responsibilities as an organization interested in protecting tenants and renters, and I hope these comments are influential in guiding practices thusly.
