In my most recent rental in Lexington, KY, the landlord promised rent hikes when we signed the lease, left rat poop in the house when we moved in, refused to fix issues like a clogged shower head, and then kept over 2/3 of our security deposit for reasons like “leaving cardboard boxes” and “failure to sweep floors.” They then moved new tenants into the space less than 24 hours after we left. This landlord had similar issues with previous renters, but it was difficult for us to find this information before moving in and we felt pressured by a lack of affordable housing in the area. There needs to be well-known safety standards for quality housing and a landlord registry so that potential
renters can easily access information about the people they’re renting from.
