Two years ago my family of 3 rented a 2 bedroom apartment on the 5th floor without elevator service in Rockville, MD. The monthly rent was set at $2000.00 which was expensive. Halfway through our first year the landlord told us we had to sign a new lease at a rental rate of $2400.00 to "lock in" that rate, otherwise it would go up even more when the lease renewal was due. We didn't have the time to look for another place because my husband was engaged in military training, so we agreed to the increase. However, the same thing happened again this year and now the landlords are going to increase the rent to $2,800.00/mo. Since we are already spending all of our earnings on food and rent, we cannot afford this and are forced to move back in to my mother's house which will then be overcrowded. Rental rates are not currently sustainable nor anywhere near reasonable and they are disenfranchising hard working families.
