My name is Dennis, and I am a tenant living in Kansas City, Mo. I am a member of the Homes Guarantee Campaign.
I have lived in my current apartment complex since November, 2019. When I moved in, my base rent was $845. My rent has been raised every single year since I moved in, and I just received notice that my base rent for my upcoming 2024 lease will be $1090. This is close to a 30% increase, yet the apartment complex has taken away amenities (fitness center) and the overall quality of response and resolution of maintenance issues/other concerns has drastically decreased.
I was also impacted by covid, and was able to receive funds through the SAFHR program twice, but the apartment complex has filed eviction notices against me on two separate occasions.
I like where I live, and I am a very hard-working individual who is very proud of taking care of business, but it is getting increasingly hard. The apartment complex does not care, and as continuously told me there is nothing they can talk to me about or negotiate on regarding rent increases. They also in strict harsh late fees, $50 after 5 days late, and additional $50 after 10 days late, which make it very hard to keep up
