I'm writing to urge you to help people across the country stay housed. I'm a tenant in Los Angeles, and my rent is over 50% of my nearly 6 figure income. I live in a rent-controlled building, but am facing a 7 or even 8% increase in rent despite this. We need to limit rent increases to 3% or 1.5x CPI whichever is lower for buildings that are using federally backed mortgages as well as enforcing good cause eviction only for such buildings. We should also create a landlord registry and standardize leases so they are fair. As soon as our eviction protections were gone, homelessness spiked here in LA, and so have the deaths of our unhoused neighbors. This is life or death to many, so please consider carefully.
