We need federal rent control protections to override oppressive state laws. Landlords receive subsidies and are able to rent dilapidated buildings and still make a profit. Rent has gone up 21% in the last year alone. Landlords will keep charging more and supplying less, gentrifying our city while lining their own pockets with money supplied by the government. We need rent control now and more rights for tennants to take control of their housing. Something that should be a fundamental human right should not be a commodity for which a very few get to profit off of the fruits of our labor.
