I have lived at my complex for over 8 years. When I moved in, I paid $450 for a one-bedroom apartment. Now I pay over $1000 a month for the same unit. Why has my rent more than doubled? When I ask this question I am told it’s a reflection of the median price in the area. So because of preventable scarcity of affordable and available housing, I have to pay more? I have to pay more because there are luxury apartments down the street? I get paid weekly and used to be able to pay my rent with one paycheck. I can’t do that anymore and it worries me. We need limitations on rent increases. I want to be able to live comfortably, with stability, and without fearing I may be evicted one day due to these endless hikes.
