Dear FHFA,
I am Mai, an international student living in Chicago, and I am writing to you about the ongoing housing challenges faced by many of us in this vibrant city, particularly in terms of affordability.
Like many students, I have encountered increased rent costs which have had a significant impact on my living situation, leading me to take on additional jobs. This, unfortunately, impacts my studies and overall well-being.
I understand that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac play an integral role in providing landlords with favorable loans. However, the welfare of tenants, particularly students, is equally important and needs consideration.
With this in mind, I support tenant protections such as limiting annual rent increases to 1.5 times the Consumer Price Index or 3% (whichever is lower) for properties under federally backed mortgages. This could create a stable rental environment and help alleviate financial pressures.
Additionally, I ask the FHFA to consider measures to prohibit unfair evictions and discrimination based on income sources. The potential for such negative experiences contributes to uncertainty and erodes trust in the system.
I also urge you to strengthen and expand protections against discrimination, fostering an inclusive environment for renters from all backgrounds.
While I am aware I may not reside in a property with a federally backed mortgage, I believe that my perspective as an international student and tenant adds value to this discussion. Our experiences can help shape better rental policies.
I appreciate the FHFA’s commitment to hearing from tenants. I hope that my experiences, along with others, can help develop a more supportive and equitable rental environment. Comprehensive tenant protections can make housing more accessible, affordable, and secure.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter, and I trust you will consider all perspectives in your decisions.
Sincerely,
Mai Vu
