As a nurse and public health professional, I see every day how the lack of tenant protections destroys people’s lives and their health. Housing is unaffordable and renting is often like applying for a job. Even healthcare workers can’t live close to work, which is a major issue should a disaster strike. The farther people have to live from work, the more difficult everything is if there are any impressment’s to disaster response. Communities need affordable housing! As a first step, the federal government should require landlords who get federal money to agree to tenant protections like limiting rent hikes, banning evictions without good cause, and standardizing leases in over 12 million apartment units nationwide. We need affordable housing to keep communities intact, promote health, and ensure that we have the workers available to run our cities and respond to emergencies.
