I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. While I am privileged enough to have been able to live here for the last 26 years through inflation and multiple housing market bubbles, I am now on the verge of being priced out. My landlord is not a corporate landlord, but the rent he charges me is a direct result of corporate landlords raising rents consistently throughout the city, and of corporate landlords’ choke hold on the price of buying a house. Housing taxes have risen and I actually sympathize with my landlord. But I have watched too many people be priced out of the neighborhoods they have lived in because of corporate greed, and it can no longer be left up to landlords to determine fair cost of living. The government must intervene on behalf of tenants, in order to preserve the diversity we love in our country. We all deserve to enjoy the benefits of stable housing in the cities and towns we love.
