I am a tenant in Las Vegas who has experienced egregious rent hikes from corporate landlords in charge of multifamily apartment complexes. This lease term my rent will increase 11%, outpacing inflation and this will make it challenging for me to afford my necessities. Rent hikes like this are predatory and should be illegal. There should be limits to the amounts that landlords can charge in rent and in how fast they are able to raise the rent. There should also be limits and reforms to the eviction process to protect tenants from unjust evictions. Tenants deserve the right to organize their complexes as they are the ones that are ultimately paying for the property. Additionally, in my professional life I work as a welfare eligibility specialist and I see the crushing blow landlords deal to tenants daily in the form of rent hikes and no cause evictions. Tenants need to be protected.
