I support tenant protections as an investor (i.e. tax payer) in our country. I live in a working class neighborhood in Detroit and I know landlords who are both living in the community and in the suburbs. I understand the capitalism side of charging what the market can bare. In the case of tenant protections, I clearly see the need for the government to provide reasonable guardrails to support housing security. My neighbors who have needed to leave due to rent increases have needed to enter their children in new schools, find new jobs that they can travel to, absorb moving costs and reset family and friend relationships. This is particularly damaging to extended families who have lived in the same neighborhood for years and developed networks for child care and family support. One could even say we need to provide tenant protections to support "family values".
