My name is Sasha and I am a citizen living in Las Vegas, Nevada. I am a member of the Homes Guarantee Campaign.
After the Covid Quarantine, my business never recovered. I work at a salon as a threader and aesthetician. Most of my clients did not come back after being closed for 4 months due to safety restrictions. I can no longer afford to live in the home I worked 20 years to get. I still cannot live independently because THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH! I am currently forced to live out of a bedroom in my daughters small home that she shares with her partner and two cats because I cannot meet any rental applications requirements and the rents keep going higher. I cannot find a single one bedroom apartment in a safe area. I am a 55 year old single woman and I deserve to feel safe and comfortable in my own home that I can afford because I work for it!
The federal government NEEDS TO PROTECT TENANTS.
The rents across the country are too damn high. The Federal Housing Finance Agency should protect tenants by limiting annual rent hikes to 1.5 times the Consumer Price Index or 3%, whichever is lower, in properties with federally backed mortgages.
The FHFA should also prohibit evictions without good cause, ban source of income discrimination, enforce and expand existing protections against discrimination, require safe and accessible housing conditions, create a landlord registry, require fair and standardized leases, ensure tenants have the right to organize, and create an Office of Tenant Protections to enforce these rights in all properties with federally backed mortgages.Sincerely,
Sasha
