As a tenant in Nevada I’d love to insist on a couple measures that we need here for renters. I’ve rented both houses and apartments here in Las Vegas and what we need from my experience is 1) rent control, and 2) way stronger rules against discrimination. To elaborate on both: 1) Rent control. My rent in my current apartment is rising 25% this year from last year, with no obvious aesthetic or functional changes to the property. I think that’s insane, and I hate that it is normalized. This is an unsustainable jump for renters, yet this is truly the cheapest rent most people have been able to find here which goes to show the outrageous pricing in the rest of the city that has gone up VERY quickly. 2) On discrimination, we need MUCH stronger rules against this. I have two examples. First, multiple realtors have told me that when friends live together, especially when they are young, they are less appealing to rent to. That has manifested multiple ways for me, most recently in my current apartment. When we were given an offer, the property manager openly doubled our security deposit because she was “worried something would happen with our friendship.” That feels completely arbitrary to me. This kind of age and family-type discrimination is outrageously inappropriate. Help resolving these particular issues would have a real impact in my area.
