My name is DaJanae Moreland. I am a tenants who lives in Kansas City, Missouri. I am a tenant union organizer and a partner of the Homes Guarantee Campaign.

I am 26 years old and I live in what is described as one of the most affordable major cities in the United States and still it is difficult to make ends meet. Landlords are hiking rents at historic rates, far beyond inflation. They are reporting record breaking profit while people like me are displaced and priced out. My tax dollars and that of my neighbors are being used to fund our displacement thru the loans given through Fannie and Freddie.

The rent is too damn high. The Federal Housing Finance Agency should implement tenant protections in properties with federally backed mortgages. These should be protections against outrageous rent hikes, source of income discrimination, eviction without good cause (including lease non-renewals), and should require our homes to be kept in safe, livable conditions. This ask is the bare minimum. Tenants across this country keep it running. We deserve to live with dignity.
