    I've lived in Kansas City all my life (23 years), and I've seen firsthand how the power imbalance between landlords and tenants forces us into making choices we otherwise wouldn't make. Since 2017, I have never stayed in an apartment/home longer than a year. This is because either my rent would go up after my first year, or the living conditions grew so bad I preferred to take my chances somewhere else. Tenants deserve tenant protections, and you have an opportunity to bring balance to the power dynamic between landlords and tenants by enacting tenant protections in properties that receive loans from the government. I hope that someday I find a place in Kansas City where I can put down roots, and I hope every tenant in the country finds a home in their community they can stay forever, without fear of poor living conditions or displacement.
