    My area, Cape Girardeau, has unacceptable tenant conditions. Landlords continue to price out tenants or limiting their access through evictions and credit scoring—why do you need credit to rent? We literally rented out to people with no credit until the 1990s. Landlords have immense influence within our local government who are more than happy to acquiesce their concerns. In the meantime, Cape Girardeau families are seeing rents rise with nothing to show for it. Company like Athena and Soto Properties provide lackluster living conditions for their tenants, all while raising their rents. Property agencies and landlords in Cape Girardeau continue to buy up property and land, denying families the ability to purchase affordable homes, they do this to keep a perpetual cycle of people paying extortionist rent rates. It is absolutely shameful how this community is exploited by those who leech off those in most need for rent control, inspections, respectable living conditions, and basic dignity.
