As the housing crisis continues to surge, it becomes more evident how crucial it is to provide tenants the ability to protect themselves from unfair leasing practices. Tenants must be guaranteed the right to organize tenant unions to leverage bargaining power with landlords to assure safe and habitable living conditions for all. Landlords must be held accountable for discriminatory and deceptive leasing practices. As the regulator of GSEs, the FHFA has the ability (and responsibility) to develop strong protections for all tenants.
