I have grown up in Kansas City and when I was young, I had a dream of living and raising a family here. As I grew up, I realized that would never become a reality. Everything became more expensive, while it seemed like my income would never be able to keep up with the cost of living. Add to that the massive student loans that I owe, credit card payments to cover the cost of unexpected, emergencies that I couldn’t pay for out of pocket, because I was never able to save enough, I now know that my dream, and thereby the American Dream, is dead. I will never make enough money to pay rent, pay bills, and save up to buy a home. The fact that the federal government loans money to landlords with lower interest rates, virtually no oversight, so they can price myself and my neighbors further and further from our hometown, makes me hopeless. The government could and should do something about this. There should be reasonable rent caps, there should be oversight, there should be some modicum of accountability. Please make the right decision so that renters can have the dignity of having livable, affordable housing, and have some sliver of hope for the future. Giving the money to slumlords will do nothing for the economy- trickle down is a farce.
