We are in another epidemic. Our people are being forced into houselessness at alarming rates. My sisters landlord sold her house without warning and the new owners gave her 60 days. She has 3 kids. Her upstairs neighbor is independently parenting 4 kids under 12. ALL of these folks are being displaced. When looking for housing the living conditions for a 3 bedroom duplex is $2000 to $2500 a month plus utilities. As we look at spaces that people are fighting over and willing to accept to avoid being pulled into the houselessness pit, we are accepting roaches, rodents, no air conditioning, filthy units, foundation and safety problems. The war on poor people is real. The conditions we are expecting people to live in is nothing short of atrocious. The wealthy few continue to prosper while the lower wealth folks and their families young and elder are forced to live in less healthy spaces continuing the racist and oppressive system that we are striving to move away from. There are landlords that do it well. That maintain safe and dignified housing, that are able to still have a profit but not by way of destroying and displacing. There are landlords with integrity. We just need more of them.
Everyone, Every one is worthy of safe and stable housing. This is not a reward to be earned. It is a human right.
    Protect and center tenants.
