As a housing Organizer and renter myself, I have seen firsthand the injustices that renters face across the nation. Personally I've dealt with sewage pumping into my backyard, my bathroom ceiling collapsing, issues with pests and rats, as well as safety issues such as locks not working and people getting into the building who do not live there. In all of these cases, my concerns were ignored or delayed. I have been financially able to move multiple times and into better apartments but so many of the people I meet and organize with do not and no one should be forced to stay in a home where they feel unsafe or unsanitary all while renters are forced to pay higher and higher prices. It is necessary for the federal government to make sure renters are protected and given equal footing in a completely unequal housing system and market. I urge you to create an office of tenant protections and landlord registry so that tenants are protected and informed.
