My name is Melanie Garland and I lived at Eastwood apts in Sandy Hook, KY. I was evicted. Sandy Hook is a very small rural town where everyone knows everyone. I didn't get the first eviction notice, they could have easily gave it to me at my apt or my job right down the hill from the apts, but they didn't. I got the second notice and was given 7 days to get out. I have a teenage son, who when the cops came they brought a social worker who tried to take my son. They are owned by winterwood. Maintaince walks in when ever they want, I could be in the shower and they just open the door. They went around telling everyone that they were taking up air conditioner filters that had not been changed in years that they were checking to see if people were smoking. One minute I could have a dog then if they get mad at me I have to get rid of my dog. I couldn't sit outside because I would make the apt look bad. There are tons of stories like this, its a small town but look at how many evictions they have had over the last 10 years. Its a small town but the number of evictions is riduculous.
I havent made the best decisions over the years but I finished my GED and got a job. I thought my life was going to get better but then I got evicted because I was't giving them some of my electric money that I got. They shouldn't have been takening that money but I needed a place to live and in Sandy Hook that's one of the few places you can rent. So I am living in my car. My son had to change schools and go to another county to live with my mom. I have an eviction on my record so I can't get any housing help, I make minimum wage so I can't afford rent, so i guess I will continue living in my car.
Please police the people you are giving loans to, dont allow them to hike rent, make them have a right to council, make them contribute to an local affordabale housing fund, and protect tenants. We can never do better if we are always kicked back down.
