Because of my criminal history I was forced to pay 3x the rent to find a place to live. It had been years since I was involved with the justice system, yet I was still being punished. If there was rent control and a cap on rent that greedy landlord would not have been to charge me so much to have a home.
Today I have a beautiful family, my wife stays home to take care of our 2daughters. Making enough money to pay the bills and rent is on me. I find myself missing time with my children to make sure they have a safe home. I shouldn’t have to choose between being a present father and a home. What would happen if I get sick and can’t work? If rent wasn’t so dam high my savings would cover 6 months rent. But we would be lucky to stay here for 2 months. We need rent control, tenant protections, the right to counsel and just cause evictions for everyone. It is crazy that FHFA hasn’t implemented them for federally backed loans already.
