I work in a social justice organization that primarily works with people facing the violence of poverty - including housing instability. Strong renter protections will provide greater housing stability in our uncertain economy. Living and working in one of the few states with a state-wide rent cap, the gaps and loopholes in coverage are even more evident. Small landlords commonly state that eviction and rapid tenant turnover is bad for business, however many in our locality are capitalizing on predatory algorithms and the hyperinflation of other costs of living to raise their rents above COLA increases. We need to protect renters more than ever as no worker making minimum wage can reasonably afford a one room apartment.
