I’ve been renting in the San Gabriel Valley for 15 years after illness and divorce caused me to lose my house and ruin my credit, I couldn’t always get the nicest places but I could afford them barely. I swore I’d never pay more then $1,300 for a two bedroom and now I can’t find one for under $2,500. I’ve been actively trying to move and can’t keep living in a property the owners abandoned and are waiting for foreclosure. I get my credit works against me and I’m working on fixing it but in the mean time I have to have a place to live, we have to use 3 full time incomes to make 3x the rent ($100,000 a year) and we didn’t even need to make that much 20 years ago when we bought our first townhouse. Rent control and limits on amounts rents can be raised, I get landlords deserve compensation but we shouldn’t have to pay their full mortgage at 2023 payments and interest rates. Being a landlord was made to make you rich later after the loan was paid off or with the assets of property not taking advantage of people and treat them like they should be able to qualify for the loan themselves!
