I want to share my support for tenants' rights and protection. Having rented my whole life, I've experienced the power that landlords can have over the application process for renting; from requiring >3x monthly income for monthly rent, to having "verifiable" rental history (ie renting on your own), and holding power over when repairs/issues get addressed. I'm fortunate that I've never been evicted, but that's mostly because of the color of my skin. All of these requirements that I've mentioned, as well as raising rent, only pushes poorer, darker skinned people out of neighborhoods. It creates gentrification and only widens the racial gap. And folks should not be penalized for utilizing services that are their rights as US citizens (ie vouchers). Oftentimes, when landlords evict, they have the upper hand in court, because folks who face eviction rarely if even receive adequate legal representation. Things need to change, and people who rent need to have stability too, even if they're not privilege enough to own a home. Until then, there will be no justice.
