My name is Mila Wade, and I am a tenant living in Louisville Kentucky. I am a member of the Homes Guarantee Campaign. For as long as I have been living on my own, the rent has continued to increase, despite the fact that wages have largely been stagnant by comparison. Every month, I barely have enough in my account for rent, let alone any of my other living expenses. I would love to one day be able to own a home of my own, but that dream feels beyond impossible with how much I spend on rent each month, and with how much property costs now that so much of it has been snatched up by landlords who then charge us to pay their mortgage for them. Something has to give—half my income should not have to go towards just putting a roof over my head without any equity of my own.
