Currently, landlords have most of the power. Landlords are businesses and the imbalance puts their business interests over people's homes, their lives. It favors landlords' ability to protect their profits over the ability for people to have shelter. Rents are too high, so high that many people are forced out of their homes into the streets. Shelter is a basic human right, yet our society finds it acceptable for people to lose their shelter and live in the streets. This is one sign not of a civilized society but of a barbaric one; another is a society that favors business profits at the expense of basic human rights, for example, people's right to shelter. The government must to more to promote affordable housing and to protect tenants' rights.
